Het Stenen Hoofd 2 (Summer) Readers edition Het Parool
It is a desolate place for most of the year, but in the summer months the Stenen Hoofd on the Westerdoksdijk in Amsterdam is a popular location for performances and as a city beach. This more than 100-year-old harbor pier, diagonally opposite the former grain silo Korthals Altes, is now heavily mutilated; the sheds have been demolished and only the piles remain of the head in the IJ. Few will therefore be familiar with the former function of this harbor head, which for decades served as a landing stage for visiting tourist ships and warships. Even fewer people will know that the Stone Head was originally intended to connect the Rotterdam Holland-America Line to Amsterdam. A special biodiversity has arisen along the quay walls of Het Stenen Hoofd. A large number of (protected) wall plants have found their place here.
